Sirens were a popular element in Norman's work. Sirens date from classical myth and were believed to be part women and part bird and were supposed to lure mariners to destruction by their seductive singing.
Nearly all the film was shot in the house and garden. The Swimming Pool. Until the late 1. Some water came from the well near the front driveway, some was collected from the roof of the house, and some was stored in the dam. The dam was built by Norman during the First World War originally for water storage but became more of a grand classical swimming pool when statues and urns were built nearby.
The pool held water up to the 1. Satyr & Sphinx. On the track down to the swimming pool there are two figures which seem to guard the start of the bush on the northern side of the property. Looking away from the house the cement figure on the left is a satyr, the part human and part goat attendant to Bacchus the god of wine in classical mythology. Opposite the cement Satyr is a Sphinx which is a bronze copy of the original cement work located in the courtyard at the back of the house. Norman's sphinx is based on the winged monster of Greek mythology which had the head and breasts of a women and the body of a lion.
